What is the NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a government-funded program that provides support to Australians with permanent and significant disability. It helps participants access the products, services and supports they need to live more independently and take part in everyday community life.

Assistive technology — such as electric wheelchairs and mobility scooters — is generally funded under the Core or Capital supports budgets, depending on your plan. Supply is subject to your NDIS plan and approval, so always confirm funding with your planner, plan manager or support coordinator before ordering.

NDIS plans are made up of three budgets — and knowing which one funds your equipment makes everything faster.

Core Supports

Funds everyday supports and consumables. Low-cost mobility aids — like walkers, canes and daily living aids from our Velana Care range — can often be purchased flexibly from this budget, depending on your plan.

Capital Supports

Funds higher-cost assistive technology such as electric wheelchairs and mobility scooters. This budget is set aside for specific items — the NDIA usually asks for supporting evidence from an allied health professional and a quote, which we can prepare quickly.

Capacity Building

Funds therapies and services that build skills and independence — including occupational therapy assessments that often support your assistive technology application.
